Allyship: a key lever in creating inclusion

We need to get into a space of “being comfortable with being uncomfortable”. This week, I had the pleasure of speaking to three of our employee resource group chairs at RSA:

  • Francesca Campbell – RSA Balance (gender balance)
  • Samantha Bradley – RSA Building Pride
  • Shradha Patel – RSA REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage)

We talked about allyship, which is a topic that crosses all three of these groups’ objectives and one of their enablers to achieving success. Increasingly, allies are seen as key levers in creating inclusion in the workplace and of course allyship is powerful because it’s a topic that crosses over all of the D&I strands. By igniting allies, we can help to level the playing field, create opportunities for all and ensure everyone feels like they belong and can bring their best selves to work.

Everyone can be an ally because privilege is multi-layered and intersectional – which means white women can be allies to people from ethnic minorities, men can be allies to women, able-bodied people can be allies to those with different abilities and so on.

In this podcast, we explore what ‘being an ally’ means, how allies make a difference and our top tips on being a better ally:

“Educate ourselves, listen to understand and be courageous in your conversations”.

Remember, we all have privilege and can be an ally to someone else. We hope you enjoy listening!
