This week’s podcast provides a chance to reflect on the last few years of Diversity & Inclusion within the Insurance sector; to consider where we are now and our predications for the future within the sector.
Historically, insurance has been a very male-dominated, but we’ve seen initiatives like the Women in Finance Charter, Dive In Festival and Inclusion@Lloyds partner networks help the financial services sector and in particular the insurance market become more diverse and inclusive, but how far have we really come?
I was delighted to be joined by Louisa Erwin, Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Europe, Eurasia and Africa at Chubb for the discussion.
5 key takeaways:
- Focus on equity, rather than equality, acknowledging that not everyone starts from the same place and consider how to improve access and eliminate bias in processes.
- The pandemic has shifted the way we work forever and, within the context of Chubb specifically has created a new ‘culture of collaboration’.
- The insurance sector still needs to consider its employer brand to attract diversity at all levels – not just at entry levels e.g., apprenticeship programmes but also other stages e.g., returners programmes, ensuring they lead to substantive roles.
- We need to build in mechanisms that will be long-standing and drive sustainable change, whilst remembering it will take time (there are no quick fixes).
- The last year has led to engagement in a way we’ve not seen before e.g., getting to know colleagues in a more personal way or engaging with clients globally, which is all changing the ‘workplace of tomorrow’ for the better.
